Wide Vs Narrow Tyres for Offroad

Wider tyres are designed to operate at lower tyre pressures.

Theoretical, contact area should be exactly proportional to tyre pressures.
The fact that the measured contact areas are slightly different are caused by measurement errors as a result of the deformation in the narrower tyres.

Wider tyres have larger air volume to absorb shock energy. Narrower but extremely tall tyres can have similar volumes of tyres but the tyres are so severely deformed that the sidewalls need to be added to the contact area. Unless you make the sidewalls of tall tyres of the same strength as the contact areas.
